Peter, the disciple of Jesus, wrote this letter to Christians who were scattered throughout countries that were under Roman rule. Around this time, Rome had conquered several nations. When Rome brought a new nation under its rule, it did not forbid it from practicing its religion, but it did want it to worship the Roman idols as well. The Christians did not agree to do this because it was against God's commandments. They knew that there is only one God. Because of this, the Roman authorities inflicted them with painful suffering.

Peter wrote this letter to encourage Christians who were experiencing similar kinds of suffering. He told them that the suffering that comes from doing good is not wrong, and that there is no shame in it. Peter also told them that Jesus's death is an example for them, so that they may have the assurance that God is with them in their suffering. Moreover, Jesus will bring them back from death to life. All of this can be an encouragement to all Christians who suffer because of their faith.

Peter teaches the believers many things about the way they should conduct themselves. He asks us to imitate God's holiness. If we belong to those that love God, we must walk in God's ways. May God help us to do this. Amen!
