This holy book is the first letter that Paul the apostle of God and his coworkers wrote to the believers who lived in the city of Thessalonica.
Before writing this book, Paul and Silas had preached in Thessalonica. When God blessed their work, many Thessalonians stopped worshipping their idols and put their faith in the God who sent his Messiah to save the world. But Paul and Silas were unable to remain in Thessalonica. They fled during the night because evil people had stirred up the people against them. All this is recorded in chapter 17 of the Acts of the Apostles.
When Paul and Silas arrived in Athens, they were concerned about the believers in Thessalonica because they were not sure how strong their faith was. So, they sent Timothy to find out what they thinking was and to encourage them in their faith. When Timothy returned, he reported to Paul and Silas. The Holy Spirit of God gave them instructions for the Thessalonians, and they wrote this letter.
This book was important to the believers in Thessalonica - it gave them wisdom and encouragement - just as it is important for us too. It will teach us that God has called us to walk in purity and to turn away from impurity. It will also teach us that work is very important for the believer. We are to make a living by working hard. This book also encourages us because it teaches us that the Messiah Jesus, whom God has sent, will return and take those who believe in him, whether they are still alive or have died, to be and remain eternally with God.
The believers in Thessalonica are an example to us, because even though they were strongly persecuted, they did not lose their faith. They always continued to trust in God. May God strengthen our faith; may he help us to persevere on his right path. May God keep us from impurity so that we will not be ashamed on the day when the Lord returns. Amen!
