When Paul arrived in Lystra, he met a believer named Timothy. Although Timothy was still a young man, Paul took him with him to preach the word of God. Timothy took this work seriously and followed his master everywhere in order to strengthen his faith and also to learn how to preach. Paul had confidence in him and sent him out on a solo mission alone. God had already revealed this to Paul through the words of a prophet.
When Timothy left to help the believers in Ephesus, Paul wrote him a letter that became this book. Paul gave Timothy plenty of guidance so he could provide the Ephesians with sound teaching on God's laws. There were wicked people in Ephesus who wanted to disrupt God's work. Paul clearly warned Timothy about these people so he could boldly teach them the truth. Paul also gave Timothy advice on how believers should conduct themselves.
There are many instructions in this book that can also help believers today. Paul wanted to help Timothy and the Ephesians stay on God's path. This applies to us too. May God help us, through this book, to gain true understanding and live in obedience throughout our time here on earth. May our communities of believers live according to the instructions God gave to Timothy through Paul. Amen!
