It all began in Israel with Jesus. But soon after, the news spread far and wide. The people who heard the good news about Jesus in Jerusalem took it everywhere. Many others believed in Jesus through these people. The apostle Paul also travelled to preach the good news, so that all people would come to know Jesus. His work progressed to the point that Christians could be found in all the provinces under Roman authority. On his third journey, Paul wrote a letter to the Christians living in Rome, the capital of the empire. He wanted to visit them so that they too could help him preach the good news far and wide.
This letter is what constitutes the holy book of Romans. Through this writing, Paul wanted to teach the people in Rome about the good news of God's salvation. He clearly explained this salvation to people who were familiar with the Jewish religion, and to those who were not. This teaching begins with the concept of sin. Before a person can experience salvation, they must know that they are sinners who must suffer in hell because of their sins. Whether religious or non-religious, all are under the power of sin.
This is why Paul tells us that we must put our hope in God for salvation. Human beings cannot save themselves from the power of their sins. They need a Saviour who can do this for them. This holy book explains this perfectly. It says that the only offering that can wipe out human sin is the sacrifice of Jesus. People must know this and believe in it.
Paul then gives further teachings that explain how a believer should live. When a person believes in Jesus, God breathes his Holy Spirit into their heart to help them follow his will. This person will rid themselves of evil and set themselves on the right path and become a model for everyone to follow. God began this work with the people of Israel, but his wish is for all other peoples to have his grace as well.
May God help us find refuge in him through this book. Amen!
